BUDDHIST PRIEST ARRESTED FOR UNDERAGE SEX...

Reuters.com

Fri Mar 10, 2006. TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese Buddhist priest who was arrested on suspicion of having paid sex with a teenage girl said he was under stress and had given in to lust.

Itsushi Ehara, 73, chief priest at a temple in the western Japanese prefecture of Hiroshima and also head of a nursery school, paid the 15-year-old girl 80,000 yen ($675) to have sex in a hotel in downtown Tokyo, a police spokesman said on Friday.

"I could not resist my lust. A lot of stress built up from running the school," Ehara was quoted by Kyodo news agency as telling police.

Ehara, who is believed to have met the girl through a prostitute-dispatch service, is also suspected of having paid for sex with several other teenage girls over a period of two to three years, Kyodo quoted police as saying.

Japan has long had a relatively lax attitude toward sexual exploitation of young people. Teenage prostitution -- known as "compensated dating" -- was outlawed in 1999, but it still goes on, though less openly than before.

PROSTITUTES GET OWN RADIO STATION...

Reuters.com

Fri Mar 10, 2006. SAO PAULO, Brazil (Reuters) - Prostitutes in the Brazilian city of Salvador are starting up their own radio station.

The Association of Prostitutes of Bahia state has won government permission for the project, enabling FM station Radio Zona to start broadcasting in the second half of the year, project coordinator Sandro Correia said on Thursday.

"We are not going to apologize for prostitution but we are going to struggle for the dignity of the profession," Correia told Reuters.

The aim was not to attract women to the business. The station will feature programs about the trade but will also discuss issues such as human rights, social questions, and sexual abuse, Correia said.

"The idea is that we have diverse programs that look at health issues, AIDS prevention, and racism, for example," he said.

Working girls and media professionals such as Correia will staff the station and will give prostitutes training in an alternative job. Funding will come from association funds, advertising and sponsorship.

Prostitution is widespread in Brazil, especially in Bahia state and other parts of the impoverished northeast.

International rights organizations have criticized the country as a destination for sex tourism and child prostitution.

Global wind energy capacity seen tripling by 2014...

Technology Reuters.com

A see of wind mills... Tue Mar 7, 2006. COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - The global wind energy industry is expected to enjoy continued strong growth in coming years with total installed capacity seen more than tripling from current levels by 2014, an industry survey showed on Tuesday.

Over the next eight years, international installed capacity is expected to increase to about 210,000 megawatts from today's installed total of about 59,000 megawatts, a study by the German Wind Energy Institute (DEWI) showed.

The study, conducted on behalf of Hamburg Messe in the run-up to an industry fair in May, identified Germany, France, Spain and the United States as key future markets.

"The international wind energy market, which showed growth rates in 2005 of 16 percent in Europe, and as much as 73 percent outside of Europe, will continue to boom," the report said.

In the world's largest wind power market, Germany, the onshore market is expected to continue to grow, while the offshore market is seen subject to delays.

Total installed power by 2010 in Germany will be about 23,700 megawatts onshore and 1,300 megawatts offshore against current capacity of 18,428 megawatts, all on land, according to the survey.

One megawatt of wind power is enough to provide electricity for several hundred households.

Denmark's Vestas (VWS.CO: Quote, Profile, Research) is the market leader in the fast-growing industry for wind energy, and has been at the center of takeover speculation for several years.

Industrial conglomerate Siemens (SIEGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) and GE Wind, a subsidiary of General Electric (GE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) have been expanding their presence in the sector. Other players include Spain's Gamesa (GAM.MC: Quote, Profile, Research) and Germany's Enercon.

Although still generally considered higher than the cost of fuel-generated electric power, the cost of wind power continues to drop as larger multi-megawatt turbines are developed and improved.

SHUSI MAY BE BAD FOR HEALTH: CALIFORNIA GROUP...

Sushi with a touch of Mercury... Mon Mar 6, 2006. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sushi is more popular than ever before but eating it "has become the new Russian roulette" in terms of safety, a group campaigning against mercury in fish said on Monday.

Eli Saddler of gotmercury.org, a campaign of California-based Sea Turtle Restoration Project, went to six top sushi restaurants in Los Angeles to test mercury levels in the fish they serve.

"The level of mercury in tuna these restaurants serve is so high they should be keeping this food off their lists," Saddler said. "Eating sushi has become the new Russian roulette."

Gotmercury.org proposes to take the study to various cities across the United States and educate sushi consumers on the risks of mercury intake, which can permanently damage the nervous system in fetuses and may cause temporary memory loss in adults.

Tuna samples from six popular sushi restaurants in Los Angeles were taken to a Southern California lab for testing.

They returned an average mercury level of 0.721 parts per million, about 88 percent higher than the reported Food and Drug Administration level of 0.383 ppm for all fresh and frozen tuna.

A couple of samples had mercury levels the FDA has declared "unsafe for anyone to eat," Saddler said.

Big-eyed tuna and blue and yellow-finned tuna are the most popular varieties used in sushi restaurants. Older and bigger fish are considered best suited for sushi but Saddler said it was not widely known that fish with longer lives carry more mercury than others.

Studies show seafood like shrimp and salmon with short life spans pose almost no risk of carrying mercury.

Nobi Kusuhara, owner of Sushi Sasabune in Los Angeles said even though the mercury level in the samples was higher than he expected, sushi is still healthy to eat.

"Even in Japan we have warnings out like FDA has issued here," Kusuhara said. "As long as restaurants warn pregnant women and people to eat smaller fish, it is definitely safer and healthier than beef or chicken."

Businesses with more than 10 employees are bound under California law to post a mercury-in-seafood warning if they serve or sell any seafood.

But Saddler said that, of the six restaurants checked, only one had an explicit sign posted on the door.

"There are cheap and easy ways to test fish, so it should be done in the United States to protect sushi consumers," Saddler said.

PROSTHETIC LEGS RETURNED; POLICE STUMPED...

Reuters.com

Mon Mar 6, 2006 LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Two prosthetic legs stolen from a 16-year-old California girl have mysteriously turned up in her mother's van, the second time in three months that an artificial limb belonging to the teen has been taken and then returned, police said on Friday.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. David Austin said investigators dusted the slightly damaged limbs for fingerprints and had interviewed a "laundry list" of people but were baffled by the thefts.

"We're treating this as a crime," Austin said. "We have a residential burglary to deal with. This is grand theft and burglary and if we find out who's responsible we'll take appropriate action."

The two legs, which were taken from Melissa Huff's bedroom in February, were found on Wednesday in the back of her mother's van, Austin said.

"Mrs. Huff had the van at Arcadia High School (for about two hours) and when she drove away she heard some rattling and ultimately found the two legs that had just recently been stolen had been placed in the back of the van," Austin said.

Melissa, who lost her right leg in 2003 when a car struck her outside the school, uses a $16,000 prosthetic limb to play softball and also has a $12,000 artificial leg for everyday use.

Thieves also broke into the Huff residence in November and took Melissa's prosthetic leg. The teen's prosthetist and a local real estate company donated about $16,000 for a new limb.

In January, the old one was discovered in her back yard, apparently thrown there by the thieves.

OSCAR FASHIONS ARE A CHALLENGE FROM THE INSIDE OUT...

Reuters.com By Alexandria Sage

G strings galore, under(wear) and on its ownMon Mar 6, 2006 LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - It's what you don't see the stars wearing at the Oscars that really provides the va-va-voom on the red carpet.

If a star wants to turn heads, she has to start with what no one sees -- the perfect undergarment to build up the bosom or minimize the backside.

Lingerie has joined the gowns, jewelry and handbags lent or given to actresses by firms eager for the publicity associated with Sunday's Oscars and other awards shows. But there are potential pitfalls, whether an ill-fitting garment, or ill-mannered observer.

Designer Isaac Mizrahi, an awards show fashion commentator for cable television, was so intrigued by Scarlett Johansson's bra at the Golden Globes that he groped the actress's breast while interviewing her.

Most stars' lingerie choices remain a mystery, but Keira Knightley, Hilary Swank and Naomi Watts planned to wear a simple G-string -- smaller than a thong -- underneath their gowns on Oscar night, the Miami-based lingerie company Cosabella said.

Some figure challenges demand more elaborate solutions.

Finding the perfect lingerie for body-revealing gowns "becomes difficult when the girl doesn't have a bust," said Parisian lingerie designer Chantal Thomass, who uses foam linings to pump up the decolletage.

But with too much up top, "it's not so beautiful," she said.

SECRETS WITHIN
Robert Behar, who designed Dolly Parton's Oscar outfits, said the secret often lies within the dress itself.

"When it comes to evening gowns, the most important is the foundation that is built inside the dresses," said Behar, who also has worked with stars Sharon Stone and Janet Jackson."If you need to have your dress changing parts of your body, then you should build it within your dress," he said.

Stars at past awards shows have asked London-based lingerie line Agent Provocateur for padded bras and corsets.

One woman with a 26-inch (66-cm) waist wanted a corset to slim her to 22 inches. "She nearly passed out at the event," marketing head Jess Morris said. Another with a small bust wore a padded bra that did too good a job.

"Nobody looked at her face the whole night," she said.

Unless she is going for a sexy "peek-a-boo" effect, no star wants visible straps or panty lines and most avoid them.

Behar pointed to the "incredible execution" of the strapless powder blue Chanel gown with a plunging back that Nicole Kidman wore at the Oscars in 2004. "For days I looked at that dress trying to figure out how it stayed (on)," he said.

As for the men of Hollywood, it is anyone's guess what's underneath those tuxedos.

"Guys have it a lot easier," Behar said. Still, he acknowledged a certain nostalgia for the golden days of Hollywood when men, too, walked down the red carpet with flatter waistlines.

"I wish we could go back to the 40s when guys were wearing girdles," he said.

GUUS ADMITS RUSSIA TALK...

Sky Sports By Alex Livie

Does Guus have any spare time at all? <--- Life is good and busy for a smiling Guus.

March 03,2006. PSV Eindhoven coach Guus Hiddink has admitted holding talks with officials from Russia with regard to taking control of the national team after the World Cup finals, but stated talk of an agreement being reached was premature.

Hiddink is one of the most highly regarded coaches in world football and has been linked with a host of top jobs in recent weeks.

Rumours suggest he is on the English FA's wanted list, while Newcastle are reportedly keeping tabs on his situation.

However reports from Russia, fuelled by RFU vice-president Nikita Simonyan, suggested he was on the verge of taking control of the Eastern European powerhouses after finishing his work with the Australian national side at the World Cup finals.

Hiddink has admitted to being interested in the post, but claims he has other irons in the fire and will not be rushed into a decision on his future.

"It all seems a bit premature," Hiddink told reporters after taking a training session with PSV on Friday. "We had some contacts but not only with the Russian association, also with other associations.

"I never spoke with that man (Simonyan) and don't know him. Put people before a camera and microphone and they will say these things, you can't prevent that."

The Russians have been without a coach since November when Yuri Semin quit after they failed to qualify for the World Cup finals.

Argentina coach Carlos Bilardo has played down talk which suggested he was set to replace Hiddink at the Australia helm in the summer.

"It's an honour for me to be included in a list of coaches to work for Australia, but I don't have any plans to do that," he said.

"It's an honour when any team considers you, but I have not had an offer from Australia.

Anyway, if an offer comes in I will not be able to accept it."

Star demands Playboy pull issue with her on cover...

Reuters.com By Dan Whitcomb

The bare body is not bare... Fri Mar 3, 2006. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Film star Jessica Alba demanded that Playboy magazine pull its March issue, saying on Thursday that its editors made her an unwitting cover girl and misled readers into thinking they could see her nude inside.

Lawyers for Alba sent Playboy a letter threatening to sue if it did not remove the issue -- which features a publicity photo of the bikini-clad actress on the front -- from the stands and pay for damages to her reputation and career.

"Playboy has violated my personal rights and blatantly misled the public, who might think I had given them permission to put me on their cover when I didn't," Alba, 24, said in a statement.

Alba's lawyers say that after the "Fantastic Four" star refused to pose for Playboy, the magazine tricked Sony Pictures into giving them a publicity photo from her 2005 film "Into the Blue," for the cover.

In the February 23 letter, which was made public on the Smoking Gun Web site, attorney Brian Wolf says Playboy sought to create the false impression that Alba would appear in revealing pictures inside the magazine.

A Playboy spokeswoman said Alba was placed on the cover after being chosen "sexiest star of the year" by its readers. She was included inside the magazine in an article on the top 25 sexiest celebrities as chosen in an online poll

"Many celebrities have appeared on the cover of Playboy, but not nude, including Claudia Schiffer, Paris Hilton, Goldie Hawn, Raquel Welch, Barbra Streisand, Brooke Shields and Donald Trump," Playboy spokeswoman Lauren Malone said.

Nederlandse pedofiel opgepakt in Marokko...

Trouw, hetNieuws Nederland Door Julia Van Traa

4 Maart,2006.

MICROSOFT SAYS BETTER THAN GOOGLE SOON...

Technology News Reuters.com By David Lawsky

Wed Mar 1, 2006. PARIS (Reuters) - Microsoft will introduce a search engine better than Google in six months in the United States and Britain followed by Europe, its European president said on Wednesday.

"What we're saying is that in six months' time we'll be more relevant in the U.S. market place than Google," said Neil Holloway, Microsoft president for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

"The quality of our search and the relevance of our search from a solution perspective to the consumer will be more relevant," he told the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit. But being good is not enough to win the hearts and minds of consumers already dedicated to another standard.

U.S. courts and the European Commission found Microsoft countered that problem by trying to kill off Netscape's browser and RealNetworks (RNWK.O: Quote, Profile, Research) audiovisual software by bundling its competing code into Windows, violating antitrust laws.

But bundling would find little purchase against Google because it lives insulated from Microsoft on the Web, unlike other applications that were easy game for the software giant as they perched directly on Windows.

Holloway said that the company has no plans to integrate its search engine into Vista, the new Microsoft Windows operating system set to replace Windows XP later this year or early next year

TWICE AS GOOD
"Should we add a Google-like search engine but twice as good hard-core into Windows? Guess what. If we did that, I don't think a company called Google would be very happy," he said.

"You've also got to a step back and say where do you integrate," he said.

Microsoft will put its search engine into its widely used communications tools Windows Messenger and Hotmail.

"Integrating search into those other applications ... makes it very seamless for people," he said. Timing in Europe will be pegged to that in the United States.

"The UK will probably be at the same time, France maybe three months behind, Germany maybe three months behind. It's not two years behind."

He said that Microsoft's goal -- but not its initial offering -- would go beyond finding URLs and instead focus in on the specific information sought by Internet users.

"Generally these days what you get back is URLs, and based upon research 50 percent of the time you do a search you don't get the URL you're looking for," he said.

Holloway said that the promise of Microsoft's search capability is to dig down.

For example, he said, potential home-buyers might find a group of houses in the price range and with the precise amenities they are seeking.

Or a surfer might find a restaurant with the kind of menu a diner wants in a particular geographic area.

1-IN-10 US IRAQ VETERANS HAVE STRESS DISORDER: STUDY...

Health News Reuters.com

Will they find back their place in our society?Tue Feb 28, 2006. CHICAGO (Reuters) - Nearly one in 10 American soldiers who served in Iraq were diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, most after witnessing death or participating in combat, a study said on Tuesday.

Mental health screening of veterans showed 21,620 out of 222,620 returning from Iraq and assessed over the year ending April 30, 2004, suffered from post-traumatic stress -- a disorder that can lead to nightmares, flashbacks and delusional thinking.

Overall, 19.1 percent of soldiers and Marines who returned from Iraq met the military's "risk criteria for a mental health concern" such as post-traumatic stress or depression, compared to 11.3 percent among veterans who served in Afghanistan and 8.5 percent from deployments elsewhere, the report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association said.

The survey covered 222,620 returning veterans from Iraq, 16,318 from Afghanistan and 64,967 from other deployments.

"A higher percentage of those soldiers (returning from Iraq) report mental health concerns and use mental health services when they get home ... compared to soldiers who are returning from deployment to Afghanistan or other locations," said study author Col. Charles Hoge of Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Of those diagnosed with post-traumatic stress, 80 percent said they had witnessed people being killed or wounded or had participated in combat and fired their weapon, the report said. Of those not diagnosed, half had experienced violence or combat.

Post-traumatic stress disorder and other combat-related mental problems can lead to family strife, divorce, alcohol and substance abuse, and unemployment, Hoge said.

While one in five veterans returning from Iraq reported concerns about their mental health, about one-third ultimately went for at least one session to be evaluated or counseled, the study said.

"The majority of service members who were referred for mental health treatment, got that treatment," Hoge said. "We're trying to encourage soldiers to come in early because we know that earlier treatment of mental health problems is the best way to prevent the long-term consequences that we've seen from past wars.

"The findings have important implications for estimating the level of mental health services that may be needed," Hoge added.

LOOK WHO IS BUYING GIRDLES...

Reuters.com

Wed Mar 1, 2006. TOKYO (Reuters) - As Japanese waistlines expand, so is the market for girdles -- for men.

A new line of male underwear that flattens the stomach and lifts the hips proved so popular when introduced on a trial basis last month that some stores quickly sold out.

"Men are getting so much more fashion conscious these days that they're starting to pay attention to the lines of their body and their silhouette, just like women," said a spokeswoman at Triumph International Japan, a leading underwear firm.

Triumph marketed two different types of "long girdle" -- one from the navel to the knees, and the other a "hip hugger" version to be worn with low-waisted pants.

Both sold so well that it plans to raise production and develop new variations, including a version for summer wear.

Other firms intend to launch similar products, according to business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun. One even plans to start selling underwear that lifts and shapes the upper body as well.

One factor behind the boom, which has made the girdles popular not only among middle-aged men but also those in their 20s and 30s, is likely to be a growing weight problem among once slim Japanese.

According to a Health Ministry report issued last month, some 29 percent of men aged 20-60 are overweight compared with 24 percent in 2000.

The Triumph spokeswoman, however, said most of the demand is due to new styles in pants that are cut to emphasize the hips. "It's really more about style," she said. "After all, there aren't that many men in their 20s and 30s whose figures are giving way."

CARNIVAL DANCERS LOVE THEIR HEELS HIGH...

Reuters.com By Terry Wade

Mon Feb 27, 2006. SAO PAULO, Brazil (Reuters) - It isn't surprising that shoes are an obsession with the beauties who grace Brazil's Carnival parades -- they're generally the biggest things they wear below the neck.

Dancers at Carnival, the pre-Lenten bash that starts this weekend and ends on Ash Wednesday, say the higher the better for their towering heels, worn with soaring feathered headdresses and little else but glittery patches, strategically placed.

Social customs are thrown out and roles inverted during the festivities, when ordinary people dress up as royalty or in drag to celebrate before Lent, the period of repentance that lasts until Easter.

Dancers say the platform sandals, preferably with shiny straps and buckles that snake to the knee, help prevent them from tipping over and injuring their ankles while dancing the lightning-quick gyrations of the samba.

"Platforms are safer," said Iris Sol, 28, a dancer for the drum section of the Barroca Zona Sul samba club in Sao Paulo.

"I've paraded with samba troupes since I was six, but the truth is that I was dancing samba when I was born," she said.

Sandals with platform heels push body weight onto the ball of the foot, where the samba is danced. Samba platforms go as high as 17 centimeters, or 6.6 inches. Heels are extra-wide.

"Platforms make women more beautiful, elegant and taller, with better posture. They help you stick out your chest and butt a bit," said Magaly Santos, 22, Sao Paulo's 2005 Carnival queen.

The culture of derrieres is so big in Brazil that GNT, a popular cable channel, produced a show about them in preparation for Carnival this year. Its title? "The National Passion."

Some Brazilians are so eager for plump backsides that they go to plastic surgeons for silicone implants.

A display of samba sandals by Fernando Pires, who designs for top dancers, included eye-catching designs like swirls of red, yellow and orange leather resembling flames, and black heels topped with lanyards of fake diamonds and pink beaded jewels.

Carnival dancers put almond oil on their feet to prevent skin from cracking and splitting. But they say blisters are inevitable during hours of late night dancing to thundering drums.

"It hurts. You get blisters and feel pain but you samba a lot because you don't want to stop," said Michele Eleuterio, 20, of the samba troupe Unidos do Peruche.

MAN SENTENCED FOR RIDE-BY BOTTOM SLAP...

Reuters.com

Sun Feb 26, 2006. BOGOTA, Colombia, Feb 24 - A Colombian man has been sentenced to four years' house arrest for slapping a woman's bottom as he rode by her on his bicycle, sparking debate on whether the punishment fit the crime.

Showing re-enactments of the incident, television news shows were filled on Friday with legal experts offering opinions about the judgment handed down earlier in the week by Bogota's district court.

Some said that to confine bicycle messenger Victor Garcia to his home for four years for smacking Diana Marcela Diaz's buttocks was excessive. Others said it would deter other men.

One program showed three models having their denim clad bottoms smacked so hard by a phantom hand it could be clearly heard by television viewers.

The women said that while the punishment seemed extreme, they hoped the case would mean they would be safer while on foot.

"It happened to me once," one of the models said. "I was walking very relaxed and a guy rode by on his bicycle and, 'ta!' He smacked me. I took off my shoe to hit him with it but he was already too far away."

HIS LOST WEDDING RING STORY IS NO CROC...

Reuters.com By Ed Stoddard

Mon Feb 27, 2006. JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Pieter Abrahamse has an original excuse for a lost wedding ring: a crocodile ate it, along with the arm it was attached to.

"He took my wedding ring, I suppose he ate it up," Abrahamse told Reuters by telephone from his hospital Monday as he recounted his life-or-death struggle with a man-eating reptile.

The 47-year-old farm manager had the lower part of his left arm torn off in the attack last Thursday on a citrus plantation in South Africa's northern Limpopo province.

But he's counting his blessings as he could easily have lost his life.

"I took my horse for an evening swim in one of the farm dams. There are lots of crocs and hippos in the area but they move around all the time, from dam to dam and into the river and out again," he said.

"I was on the lookout for hippos and didn't see any. It slipped my mind that there might be crocodiles," he said.

He was standing belly-deep in water about 5 metres from the shore when he felt a biting jolt in his left hip. He said thought it was a hippo but quickly realized it was a crocodile.

"I started to fight immediately. So I hit him with my left arm and then he went for my left forearm," Abrahamse said.

"It pulled me under the water for a few seconds and I knew this was his biggest advantage. I realized if I didn't stand up my wife will never find me again," he said.

Somehow, he managed to stumble to his feet and then he felt the crocodile lose its grip.

"What I didn't realize at the time was that it had let go because it had taken part of my left arm off," he said.

With his right arm, Abrahamse then grabbed the rope of his horse, which fortunately for him chose that moment to take flight, dragging him to safety.
Abrahamse then walked 200 metres to his house and his wife drove him 60 kms (40 miles) to the nearest hospital.

"I'm lucky, I didn't lose too much blood ... The biggest problem with a croc bite is it can be septic. They never brush their teeth," said Abrahamse.

And when he gets out of the hospital does he plan to look for the culprit? "Oh yes, I'll be looking for him alright," he said with a laugh.
